Stephen Chiolis was brought to HUMC at Pascack Valley, where blood was taken, Westwood Police Chief Frank Regino told Daily Voice. Authorities were awaiting results.
Based on his condition, Chiolis was issued a summons for DWI pending those results, he said.
Chiolis in 2011 received probation after admitting in federal court that he lied to the government when he said he made barely $93,000 over two years when it was closer to $787,000.
Chiolis admitted intentionally under-reporting income for 2004 and 2005 from both a real estate appraisal company known as All American Abstract Incorporated, in which he was a shareholder, and mortgage broker All American Funding Services, owned by an associate.
He was ordered to spend eight months in home detention and three years on probation -- and to make restitution to the IRS.
Around 7 p.m. Wednesday, township Police Officer Michael Ferrarini began following Chiolis's green Mini-Cooper after a dispatcher received a 911 call of possibly intoxicated driver headed east on Washington Avenue.
Ferrarini "spotted the vehicle in question and activated his emergency lights and sirens attempting to catch up to [it]," Washington Township Police Chief Glenn Hooper said.
Following the first crash, on the Westwood border, Chiolis continued for several blocks before rear-ending a vehicle stopped at Summit Avenue.
Ferrarini was taken to the hospital to be treated for more injuries, then was released, the chief said.
