Teen blows stop sign, crashes new car into van

A teenager blew a stop sign and crashed his new Mitsubishi into a Verizon van, knocking it onto its side and trapping the driver — but police officers quickly rescued him, and EMS workers zipped him and two other victims to an area hospital, Hillsdale authorities said.

The impact of the crash knocked the van off the roadway at the intersection of Maple Avenue and Beach Street, said Police Chief Chip Stalter. Sgt. Joe Mazzeo and Officer Dave Sayers were the first to arrive, and “working quickly and carefully,” got the trapped Verizon worker out, he said.

Responding emergency service workers from Hillsdale and Washington tended to both drivers and a passenger who was in the car.

“All three men involved in the crash avoided any traumatic injuries, likely thanks to vehicle safety features,” Stalter said.

All three, however, “complained of pain resulting from the impact and were taken to an area hospital for further evaluation and treatment” just before noon Wednesday, the chief said.

The 18-year-old driver was cited for running a stop sign, he said.

Stalter gave props to Mazzeo and Sayers, and also cited the assistance of the Hillsdale Fire Department and the emergency medical techs from both towns.

It’s unclear why police didn’t identify those involved.
