Another motorist trying to make a left off the ramp apparently caused the crash, sending the car tumbling, around 3:20 p.m.

Cellphone calls immediately poured in, and Washington Township police and firefighters and the Hillsdale Ambulance Corps rushed to the scene, Ciocco said.

“Preliminary investigation into the cause of the accident revealed the vehicle heading eastbound on Washington Ave(nue) was struck by a vehicle attempting to make a left off of the exit ramp, causing the vehicle on Washington Ave to roll over,” he said.

“No criminality has been detected and neither driver was under the influence of any liquor or drugs that could have impaired their ability to operate their automobiles,” Ciocco added.

The lone occupant of the overturned vehicle was taken to an area hospital but did not appear to have life-threatening injuries, the acting chief said.

Besides the “valued assistance” of those civilians who either called police or tried calming the driver, Ciocco said the “fluid communication” among three separate emergency service agencies helped get the motorist out of the car and to the hospital quickly.
