“Sunday mornings in Westwood are usually quiet and sleepy. Not today,” wrote Nancy Mockridge Dietel. “People not familiar with the streets don’t know how to navigate. A slow train came in at 10:27 and stopped traffic for at least 5 minutes…. Police have everything under control, though.”
As CLIFFVIEW PILOT first reported exclusively: “One of the lines shorted out, causing a series of sparks,” Police Chief Frank Regino said. “A couple of the grates were smoking.”
“It wasn’t an explosion,” the chief told CLIFFVIEW PILOT, correcting another media source’s report.
Police blocked off the street with help from firefighters and evacuated the businesses and residences. Although the residents were allowed to return around 7:30, some of the restaurants lost “Valentine’s Night” business.
“It doesn’t appear that too many people went without power,” Regino said. “The unfortunate part was that a couple of businesses along Broadway had to close down.”
There weren’t any major power disruptions, either. All of the traffic lights continued working, for instance.
“PSE&G says they’ll be working through the night,” Regino said Saturday night. The block will remain closed to traffic until they’re finished, the chief said.
