MARK YOUR CALENDAR: It’s not your typical school dance: 6th-, 7th- and 8th-graders from the Holdrum Middle School in River Vale and the George G. White Middle School in Hillsdale are invited to a nightclub-styled event, chaperoned by police, teachers and parents.
The proceeds go to the Joseph Buldo-Licciardi Memorial Scholarship Fund.
The River Vale Police Department is sponsoring the event, known as VIBE, in conjunction with the River Vale Parent Teacher Association, from 7 to 9 p.m. Friday Sept. 28 at the Holdrum School.
Admission: $10.
The date is special: Joey, who died from a seizure nine years ago, would’ve turned 22 that night.
The group behind VIBE, In the Mix, is a favorite of police departments and parent-teacher associations because of its turnkey ability to take any room and transform it into a nightclub, with no concerns over health, safety — or fun.
In the Mix also prides itself on its cutting-edge sound, lighting and video on massive screens. Party-goers can send live text messages and song requests to the 10-feet screens, making the experience interactive. Their DJs also know what keeps a room dancing.
Amid the clean, safe entertainment, many will be thinking of Joey Buldo-Licciardi.
Joey, who lived in River Vale, was a graduating recruit with the local department’s Junior Police Academy Class of 2002. He returend a year later and was promoted to sergeant.
His upbeat personality and sense of humor made him extremely popular with classmates and others, including member of the River Vale police department.
Although in otherwise perfect health, Joey had a form of epilepsy that, in most children, vanishes by the time they’re 15.
He was 14 when he suddenly and unexpectedly suffered a fatal seizure on Nov. 4, 2003.
Every year since then, the Buldo-Licciardi family and the River Vale Police Department have awarded scholarships to graduating students of the Holdrum Middle School and Pascack Valley High School in Joey’s honor.
They’re hoping for a huge turnout on the 28th to help raise money to support the fund.
