A good Samaritan got the boy out of the 2010 Scion, which came to rest on its passenger side after the crash on Westwood Avenue around 10:20 p.m., Detective Sgt. John DeVoe said overnight.

The utility pole "was sheared off near the base and utility wires were perches precariously" above it, he said.

Police "removed the juvenile victim to a safe location and rendered aid until emergency medical personnel arrived and assumed care," the sergeant said.

The victim was rushed to HackensackUMC at Pascack in Westwood and then flown by AirMed One to the main campus.

His injuries, although serious, weren't considered life-threatening, DeVoe said.

Responders included River Vale firefighters and volunteer ambulance workers, the HUMC Mobile Intensive Care Unit and both Old Tappan and Westwood police, who provided traffic control.

The Bergen County Sheriff's Office Bureau of Criminal Investigation collected evidence for the subsequent probe being conducted by the county prosecutor's Fatal Accident Investigation Unit and River Vale police.
