New Milford rookie Police Officer Samuel Gerais — out with his field training officer, Derek Mattessich — found a woman who’d just gotten off  train at the River Edge station who saw the Berkeley Street boy get on, Capt. John Kiene told CLIFFVIEW PILOT.

They relayed the information to officers at headquarters who alerted NJ Transit police to stop the train, he said.

An alert also was broadcast to surrounding towns, the captain said.
