WASHINGTON TOWNSHIP, N.J. -- An 88-year-old Washington Township driver's car barreled backwards into a neighbor's house across the street Monday afternoon, rendering the house uninhabitable.

"The woman backed out of her out of [her] driveway across the street and down a small embankment into the house" around 1:15 p.m., Police Lt. Richard Skinner told Daily Voice.

"The resident was home at the time and luckily went into the kitchen to answer the phone," he said. The homeowner's 16-year-old Golden Retriever ended up beneath the car but wasn't pinned or injured, the lieutenant said.

The car was towed out and driven up onto a flatbed, Skinner said.

Paramus Rescue helped township firefighters rig jacks to secure the house, which later was shored up by ServPro, he said.

A township building inspector was due before 6:30 p.m. to check their work, the lieutenant said..

Hillsdale EMS also responded, along with borough police.
