Peruvian National In Emerson Charged With Assaulting Girl, 9

EMERSON, N.J. -- A Peruvian national living in Emerson was charged with the aggravated assault of a 9-year-old girl.

Rafael Salvador-Jauregui, 39, was being held on $50,000 bail in the Bergen County Jail following his arrest Wednesday.

Should he make bail, he is prohibited from returning home or having contact with the child, under a judge's order.

Bergen County Prosecutor John L. Molinelli said members of his Special Victims Unit arrested Salvador-Jauregui following an investigation with Emerson police.

They charged him with aggravated assault and child endangerment.

Molinelli didn't specify the nature of the incident, except to accused Salvador-Jauregui of causing "significant injury" to the youngster.

Local police notified his investigators as well as the state Division of Child Protection and Permanency, the prosecutor said.

Salvador-Jauregui is married and works as a chef, he said.

A Jan. 14 arraignment was scheduled.
