Rafael Salvador-Jauregui, 39, was being held on $50,000 bail in the Bergen County Jail following his arrest Wednesday.
Should he make bail, he is prohibited from returning home or having contact with the child, under a judge's order.
Bergen County Prosecutor John L. Molinelli said members of his Special Victims Unit arrested Salvador-Jauregui following an investigation with Emerson police.
They charged him with aggravated assault and child endangerment.
Molinelli didn't specify the nature of the incident, except to accused Salvador-Jauregui of causing "significant injury" to the youngster.
Local police notified his investigators as well as the state Division of Child Protection and Permanency, the prosecutor said.
Salvador-Jauregui is married and works as a chef, he said.
A Jan. 14 arraignment was scheduled.
