Montvale and Woodcliff Lake police assisted in the arrests yesterday afternoon on Kinderkamack Road — one in the shopping center that houses an A&P supermarket and the other across the street at a Taco Bell restaurant.
Park Ridge police got the call just before 5 p.m. of the pair buying and exchanging several hundred dollars worth of gift cards from the A&P at the Ridgemont Shopping Center, Capt. Joseph Rampolla said this morning.
They found Jeffrey LaRoche, 30, and 22-year-old Stanley Diogene sitting in a rented 2014 Nissan Maxima in the parking lot (photo, above) and questioned them, Rampolla said.
LaRoche (above, left) gave the officers a fake Florida driver’s license and then ran off, the captain said. Diogene (above, right), meanwhile, admitted to being at the A&P, he said.
Park Ridge Police Officer John Gleason chased him into Montvale, where LaRoche stopped and tried to get into an occupied car at the Taco Bell, Rampolla said.
The driver pulled away and Gleason grabbed the suspect, the captain said.
Diogene, 22, and LaRoche, 30, were being held on $75,000 bail each in the Bergen County Jail.
Both are charged with wrongful impersonation, theft by deception, using false documents to obtain a driver’s license or other ID.
LaRoche is additionally charged with resisting arrest, eluding, hindering and obstruction.
Both also were charged with manufacturing, distributing or possessing drugs.
Police discovered dozens of gift cards in various names, along with the synthetic pot, both of which Rampolla said were in plain view. The vehicle was impounded while investigators obtained a warrant to search it, the captain said.
They were also hoping to find the driver of the vehicle that he said LaRoche tried to get into, as well as any witnesses of the foot chase, he said.
Police Chief Joseph Madden thanked Montvale, Woodcliff Lake and Hillsdale police for their help.
