A store employee called police after 22-year-old Devon John Sinclair of Brooklyn (above, right) tried using a counterfeit hundred to buy gift cards Friday afternoon, Detective Mark Piercy said.
Sinclair told Patrolman Keith Docwra that he’d gotten a ride from a man still waiting in the lot outside, Piercy said.
Docwra immediately smelled burnt marijuana from the vehicle, the detective said.
With assistance from Officers Thomas Pianettini and Michael Catenacci, he took the driver, 21-year-old Jihad Mahmud of Hillsdale (above, middle), and a passenger, Matthew Scott, 22, from Irvington (left), into custody.
A consented turned up a small amount of pot, records show.
Sinclair was charged with possession of three counterfeit Benjamins, for which detectives contacted the U.S. Secret Service.
All three were charged with forgery, theft by deception and drug-related offenses.
Sinclair and Mahmud later posted $20,000 bail each – Sinclair on Saturday and Mahmud on Monday — and were released.
Scott remained held on the same bail this afternoon in the Bergen County Jail.
