Not much time left to register for Pascack Valley Junior Police Academy

Time is running out to register for the Pascack Valley Junior Police Academy, four days of education and fun modeled after actual law enforcement training, for children 10 to 14.

Youngsters from Hillsdale, Westwood and Washington Township are invited to the free event, which begins Monday, June 27, at Westwood High School, 701 Ridgewood Rd., Washington Township.

The sessions will run from 8:30 in the morning until 2:30 p.m.

The deadline to register is this Wednesday. You can do so at the police department in any of those towns or at your child’s school.

Last year, the 10th academy had its largest class ever — nearly 100 youngsters.

Not only were they visited by motorcycle brigades, the New Jersey National Guard RAID helicopter, and U.S. Secret Service agents: The group took a field trip to DEA headquarters in Newark.

It’s just as big a kick for the officers to give the kids a behind-the-scenes look at the job while counseling them in responsibility, accountability and wise decision-making — especially when it comes to potentially dangerous situations — in a fun, relaxed atmosphere.
