"I'm very honored, humbled and pleased to serve the best police force in Bergen County," Smith told Daily Voice. "My career has been a dream fulfilled so far, but there's a lot more work to be done."
Smith comes from a police family: His father worked for Hillsdale and his two older brothers also serve.
He also is a history buff and has compiled two books on the department's history over nearly 120 years from newspaper clippings, police reports and other memorabilia collected through the decades (SEE VIDEO, ABOVE).
A Tenafly native, Smith joined the department in January 1997. He was promoted to sergeant in 2012 and then to lieutenant a year ago this week.
Smith has spent more than 15 years as the department's D.A.R.E. coordinator . He also is the department's liaison to the American Legion and the Hillsdale Police Auxiliary.
