Man brings grenade found in dead relative’s home to police station

CLIFFVIEW PILOT HAS IT FIRST: It’s not every day a man walks into a police station with a hand grenade. But River Vale’s officers barely flinched when a man who found the weapon while cleaning out a dead relative’s home drove it to the station Friday afternoon.

“They’re consummate professionals,” Detective Sgt. John J. DeVoe told CLIFFVIEW PILOT. “They dealt with it.”

They immediately summoned the Bergen County Police Department Bomb Squad, which arrived just before 2 o’clock, took the grenade and disposed of it, DeVoe said.

River Vale Police Chief Michael McCann thanked his county counterpart, Bergen County Public Safety Director Brian Higgins, for his squad’s professional work.
