The 50-year-old Orchard Place resident was unarmed and came out roughly 20 minutes after police got the 6:40 p.m. call from the sister, who lives in Florida, the chief said.
Police from “just about every town in the [Pascack] Valley arrived right away and surrounded the house,” he said. They included Westwood, Woodcliff Lake, Washington Township and Emerson, in addition to the Hillsdale officers — some of whom were scheduled to work the midnight shift.
A Bergen County Police Department K9 unit was there and members of the SWAT team were assembling, as well.
Officers tried to communicate with the man, without success, Stalter told CLIFFVIEW PILOT..
“We didn’t know whether he had a gun or not,” he said.
Then, just before 7 p.m., he suddenly “came out on his own — no gun,” the chief said.
He was taken to Bergen Regional Medical Center — with a police escort — for an evaluation, Stalter said.
The K9 unit and other officers searched the house, just in case, he said. They declared it all-clear around 7:25 p.m., roughly 45 minutes after the incident began.
