EDITORIAL: Technically, he didn’t have to do it: Bergen County Prosecutor John L. Molinelli could have simply filed his report with the state Attorney General about the Feb. 6 chase and subsequent shootout that left Paramus Police Officer Rachel Morgan critically wounded and the suspect dead from deliberately shooting himself. But the prosecutor held a news conference today to laud Morgan and her backup, Officer Ryan Hayo, as heroes.
Paramus P.O. Rachel Morgan
Both were at the prosecutor’s office today in uniform — the first time for Morgan since the night of the Super Bowl, when Michael Sean Carmody led her on a brief chase down Route 17, skidded out, then began firing as the young officer approached his car.
Morgan took a bullet to the abdomen and another to the leg. Within seconds, Hayo arrived and — according to Morgan — saved her life. A brief gunfight followed before Carmody, for some inexplicable reason, put the barrel of his gun under his chin and pulled the trigger.
“She did her job, and it was an extraordinary job,” Molinelli said today. “We call these people heroes.”Jerry DeMarco Publisher/Editor
Indeed, we do.
We do not call them greedy, or “me first” or any of the derogatory terms that have been flung at our dignified public servants by the arrogant, self-promoting suit who serves as New Jersey’s governor.
Kudos to Morgan. Big ups to Hayo. And bravo to Prosecutor Molinelli. His responsibilities include investigating all police shootings and then forwarding his findings to the state’s top cop. Yet he took it a step further.Bergen County Prosecutor John L. Molinelli
Amid all the turmoil over salary and benefits, Molinelli reminded everyone today what truly matters — that there are those who take an oath to serve and protect us, no matter the cost.
