The 2015 Volvo driven by 61-year-old James Duncan of Park Ridge mounted the Park Avenue sidewalk, where it hit both victims, borough police Capt. Joseph Rampolla said Monday.
"At the crash scene several off-duty nurses stopped to assist responding officers in the life-saving efforts," the captain said, "but the injuries sustained were too great to overcome."
Ioannis Kapantais, 69, of Park Ridge later died at Hackensack University Medical Center.
Maochina Hu, 64, of Montvale died on Monday, Rampolla said.
"Alcohol or drugs [were] not a factor in the crash," the captain said, adding that "it was determined that the vehicle was traveling below the speed limit when [it] left the roadway.
"This was a horrible tragedy that has left two families without a father" on Father's Day, Rampolla noted. "Our thoughts and prayers go out to the Kapantais and Hu families. The Park Ridge community is deeply saddened by the event."
Detectives from the Bergen County Prosecutor's Office Fatal Accident Investigation Unit and Park Ridge police handled the June 19 crash.
They determined that Duncan's car "left the roadway in the area of Diedtrich Lane and struck the two pedestrians," acting Bergen County Prosecutor Gurbir S. Grewal said Tuesday.
"Hu had just crossed Diedtrich Lane, walking westbound in the crosswalk, and was struck as he re-entered the sidewalk on Park Avenue," Grewal said. "Kapantais was walking eastbound on the sidewalk and was struck as he was approaching the crosswalk at Diedtrich Lane."
Duncan "was examined at the scene by EMS but reported no injuries and did not require transport to a hospital," the prosecutor noted. "He has since been examined by medical practitioners and was admitted to The Valley Hospital for evaluation.
"The cause of the crash remains under investigation and no determination has been made relative to any potential criminal or motor vehicle charges."
