WNY police say layoffs threaten citizens’ safety

Police and their supporters turned out in droves on yesterday to give West New York commissioners and Mayor Sal Vega their version of a city plan to lay off nearly two dozen officers unless they accept reduced health benefits before the month is out.

“You are the ones that will suffer when crime goes through the roof,” one member of PBA Local 361 told the panel, to the applause of the hundreds who packed this afternoon’s meeting.

Vega said he wants to prevent layoffs — but that taxpayers’ wallets take priority.

“All options are on the table,” the mayor said, to a chorus of boos.

“It’s an unbelievable thing that they’re trying to do,” Officer Thomas Mannion told reporters before the meeting.
