ROCHELLE PARK, N.J. – Rose Hoffmann, of Rochelle Park, died Friday, Jan. 15. She was 96.
She was born as Rose Barchi Dec. 5, 1919, in Phillipsburg. Her parents, Marcella (Belangero) Barchi and Teodoro Barchi, were immigrants from Asti and Pralboino, Italy. She attended public schools in North Bergen and graduated from Emerson High School in Union City in 1936. She was awarded a scholarship to Montclair State College but was forced to decline it because of the economic conditions of the Great Depression.
She married George "Ted" Hoffmann in 1941, and they were married until his death in 1982. She worked in defense plants during World War II and left the work force to raise her children in the postwar period. She spent the 1950s and 1960s as a wife and mother, living in West New York, N.J. She also remained close to her sisters, Ursula Roteman and Beatrice Piano, through the years. Her extended family was central to her life, including her sisters' families, the extended Hoffmann family and close friends who effectively became family.
In 1963, she moved with her husband and children to a house that she loved in Rochelle Park. In the 1970s, she worked in sales and as a manager at women’s clothing store Marianne's in Paramus. She found satisfaction in her work and was devoted to helping her husband during his failing health.
She is survived by her son, George Hoffmann and his wife, Linda, in Sterling, Mass.; daughter, Susan Hoffmann-Ogier and her husband, Wayne, in Bennington, Vt.; granddaughters Miriam Hoffmann-Ogier and Lisa Hoffmann; and members of her extended family and many friends.
Family will receive friends from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Monday at the Vander Plaat Memorial Home, 113 S. Farview Ave., Paramus. A funeral service will be conducted at 10 a.m. Tuesday at the Vander Plaat Memorial Home. Interment will take place at Weehawken Cemetery in North Bergen.
