Just after 5:35 p.m., Maywood police were notified of a hit-and-run motor vehicle accident at Spring Valley Avenue, Detective Sgt. William Phayre said. At the scene, officers found a vehicle that had struck and toppled a traffic light.

The male driver fled on foot, running through several backyards before entering someone else's home on Oak Avenue, according to Phayre. The Oak Avenue resident chased the suspect out of the home, and he ran back towards West Spring Valley Avenue.

The suspect then jumped onto the roof of a moving minivan. As the minivan approached the intersection of West Spring Valley Avenue and Maywood Avenue, with the suspect on the roof, a second accident involving two other vehicles happened.

The drivers said they were distracted by seeing the suspect riding on top of the minivan.

Maywood Police Detective Benjamin Singer and Officer Keion Best arrived on scene and arrested the suspect, who was in police custody as of press time.

Sources with direct knowledge of the incident said the man was DUI.

The driver is expected to face criminal and motor vehicle charges, Phayre said.
