Zach Parrinello, 25, told police "he could not remember what happened to cause the accident" on Ringwood Avenue near the Wanaque Reservoir Headquarters just after 5:30 a.m., Capt. Kenneth Fackina told Daily Voice.
The 2011 Mercedes was headed northbound when it crossed over into the southbound lanes, striking the left front fender of a 2007 Chevy Trailblazer, Fackina said.
The 52-year-old Trailblazer driver from Wanaque complained of neck pain, while Parrinello's male passenger sustained head and facial injuries, he said.
Both were transported to Chilton Memorial Hospital, the captain said.
Parrinello, who most recently worked as a waiter at a local restaurant, was offered medical treatment but refused, he added.
Officer Anthony Mule -- along with Officer Carbone and Sgt. Spillane -- conducted a series of roadside sobriety tests, which Parrinello failed, Fackina said.
He was taken into custody and charged with DWI and assault by auto, as well as not wearing a seatbelt and not maintaining a lane. Police then released Parrinello to a family member pending a court hearing.
