Learn The Secrets of Skylands Manor In Ringwood

RINGWOOD, N.J. -- Intricate chimney complexes are among unique architectural features of Skylands Manor, an English Tudor open for public tours July 10 in Ringwood, N.J.

Volunteer docents lead visitors on a tour of the architecture and history of Skylands Manor $7 adults; $5 seniors and students ages 13-18; $3 ages 6-12; free under 6.

Tudor Architecture originated in England in the late Gothic period, and continued to be popular into the Renaissance. Its most notable characteristic was the half-timbering on the exterior; it also featured crenelated walls, large groups of rectangular windows, oriel (suspended) or bay windows, and intricate chimney complexes.

The interiors usually had large central halls, wood panelng, molded plaster ceilings, and elaborately carved staircases. Tudor Revival became a popular style for the elaborate country houses of wealthy Americans.
