'Sleepless Night:' 2 Hikers Safe After 5-Hour Rescue In North Jersey
Two missing North Jersey hikers were rescued in a five-hour mission early Thursday, Sept. 19, responders said. According to the Closter Volunteer Ambulance & Rescue Corsp, Rescue 728, the East Bergen Rappel Team, and Alpine firefighters were called to Stateline Lookout in Alpine for the two missing hikers. A hiker from New Jersey complaining of chest discomfort and breathing problems collapsed and died while hiking in the Catskills last weekend, officials said. The man was identified by the Times Union as Ravi K. Vegiraju, 50, of Morganville. The incident happened in Greene County in the hamlet of Lanesville around 8:50 a.m., Saturday, Sept. 16. A woman had to be rescued and taken to a nearby trauma center after falling during a hike on the Delaware Water Gap Thursday morning, authorities said. The Knowlton Township Fire and Rescue Company was one of several crews that responded to the report of a fallen hiker about four miles north on the Appalachian Trail from the Dunnfield Creek Parking Area on Route 80, the squad said. A murder victim whose body was found last week at Eagle Rock Reservation has been identified as a 31-year-old man from New York City, authorities announced. Kelsey Steels' body was discovered by hikers along a trail inside of the West Orange on Friday, March 4, Acting Essex County Prosecutor Theodore N. Stephens, II, said. Responders rescued two 18-year-old hikers who got lost in the woods along the Palisades after dark. Palisades Interstate Parkway police were joined by various rescuers who helped find the pair near the State Line Lookout in Alpine shortly before 8:30 p.m. Monday. A New Jersey native died while hiking in a national forest. Michael Benedetto La Marca, 39, was hiking at Peralta Trailhead in Arizona's Tonto National Forest when he died Oct. 3, according to his obituary. Palisades Parkway PD, Westchester Marine Unit Pluck Injured Fort Lee Hiker Off Alpine Cliffs
Members of the Westchester County Police Marine Unit, Palisades Interstate Park police and Piermont EMS and firefighters united to rescue a Fort Lee hiker trapped on the Palisades above the Hudson River, authorities said. The victim, 50, tripped and injured her arm while hiking Sunday along an unmarked trail in Alpine, PIP Police Lt. Jock Watkins said. “She was about 750 feet away from the shore at an approximate angle of 70 degrees,” Watkins said.
