Responding police officers found Patrick Maupai, 40, on the lawn of the New Milford Avenue home he shared with his mother, Linda Maupai, across the street from Dumont High School, shortly before midnight Sunday. He was still on the phone talking with the dispatcher, the prosecutor said. Maupai had admitted hitting his mother with the fire iron, Musella said. Drugs Or Alcohol Suspected In Dumont Rollover A driver was hospitalized in custody after her SUV hit a tree and rolled over in Dumont. Police suspected the borough driver was under the influence when the crash occurred on Madison Avenue near Cooper Avenue shortly before 6 p.m. Saturday. Members of the Dumont Volunteer Ambulance Corps took the driver to Hackensack University Medical Center. Brookside Towing removed the vehicle.

Fumes Clear High School In Bergen An exhaust fan broke, filling part of Dumont High School with neutralized sulfur fumes Monday afternoon, responders said. Neither the Science Department teacher involved nor any students or staff were injured or exposed in the incident just before 2 p.m., responders said. Dumont Fire Chief Mark Abdulla called the incident a ventilation issue and not a spill. Also responding were members of the Dumont Volunteer Ambulance Corps, a Bergen County Hazardous Materials Unit and a New Milford Hazardous Materials team.
