Toms River Driver, 18, Charged In Hit-Run Crash That Left Whippany Utility Worker Critical An 18-year-old driver from Toms River was charged with Monday's hit-and-run that left a 51-year-old utility worker From Whippany in critical condition, authorities said. Crash Closes Route 27 In Metuchen Route 27 (Middlesex Avenue) at Grove Avenue was to temporarily remain closed Monday for an investigation of a morning crash, Metuchen police said. They said a survey worker was struck by a hit-and-run driver in a white vehicle and advised motorists to avoid the area. Initial unconfirmed reports said a person was struck by around 9:15 a.m. and that a vehicle fled the scene.
