There was no risk to students or staff at any time, school officials said.
The lockdown began at 10 a.m. Friday and lasted about 45 minutes, Piscataway Superintendent of Schools Frank Ranelli said in an email blast to parents.
"The involved individual was immediately secured by the building administration and security," Ranelli said. "The Piscataway Police Department was immediately on site and staff and students were not at risk at any time."
Ranelli praised students and staff for responding perfectly and taking all necessary precautions in response to the announced call.
"I am very proud of the way your children responded. We will continue to work with the police department to investigate and monitor the situation, facts, and details," Ranelli wrote.
Piscataway Township Police Department, on its Facebook page, also confirmed a safe conclusion to the lockdown, writing: "We were on site during the incident; staff and students were not at risk at any time. We will continue to work with the school administration to investigate this incident and monitor the situation."
Initial unconfirmed reports from the school on Belmer Road said the threat possibly was made by a student.
