Newark Mourns Passing Of Sgt. Rafael Ramos, Jr., 59 Rafael Ramos, Jr., a Newark police sergeant died on Tuesday, Jan. 16, following an illness, the city announced on Facebook.  Ramos joined the Newark Police Division in Feb. 1991 and was promoted to sergeant in 2022, Newark Mayor Ras J. Baraka and Public Safety Director Fritz G.
