On Friday, March 17, a 61-year-old man was walking in the area of Chosin Few Way and East 40th Street when James Johnson ran toward him and shot him in the leg, police said. Johnson fled northbound on Chosin Few Way while the victim walked toward the Costco parking lot where bystanders summoned police, officers said. He was transported to an area hospital for treatment, police said.
Johnson was taken into custody on Wednesday, June 15, police said. While arresting him, detectives recovered a .45 caliber Haskell semi-automatic firearm, the firearm used in the shooting, police said. Police also discovered that Johnson was classified as someone who was not allowed to possess a firearm, officers said.
Johnson was charged with aggravated assault with a deadly weapon and other weapons charges, police said.
