Update: Railroad avenue had been reopened as of 7:15 a.m. Monday, Feb. 6. Original story: A re-routed double-decker train downed wires closing an intersection in Rochelle Park for several hours, authorities said. Several poles and the traffic light on Rochelle Avenue were damaged in the accident around 5:40 p.m., Rochelle Park Police Lt. James DePreta said. Five Ridgewood teens avoided serious injury when their SUV slammed head-on into a utility pole. A large contingent of police, firefighters and EMS units responded after the Nissan Pathfinder rounded a curve, knocked down a "No Parking" sign and crashed on narrow Marshall Street near Ridgewood High School late Friday afternoon Jan. 27. Gas-Fed Fire Ravages North Haledon Home
No injuries were reported in a heavy house fire in North Haledon. Fed by gas from a stove, the noontime blaze on Monday, Jan. 16, ravaged the two-story, wood-frame home across from the Salesian Sisters' Mary Help of Christians Academy on Belmont Avenue. PSE&G was called on a rush to cut the feed. Mutual aid firefighters included companies from Franklin Lakes, Haledon, Hawthorne, Midland Park, Paterson, Prospect Park and Wyckoff. An officer escaped serious injury when a pole fell onto a police cruiser during a fiery overnight crash involving a stolen car and two fleeing occupants in Ridgefield. A bus driver with no passengers avoided injury after toppling a utility pole in Paramus. The NJ Transit bus clipped the pole on East Ridgewood Avenue adjacent to the New Jersey Veterans Memorial Home and Bergen New Bridge Medical Center shortly before 2 p.m. Friday, Nov. 18. 2 Passed Out, 11 Total Hospitalized In CO Leak At Newark Senior Living Facility
Eleven residents of a Newark senior living facility were hospitalized in a carbon monoxide leak early Saturday, Oct. 15, authorities said. Two people who had passed out brought police to the Stephen Crane Elderly Apartments on Evergreen Lane around 5:40 a.m., Newark Public Safety Director Fritz Fragé said. Energy Bills Could Spike By 25% For New Jersey Customers
Energy bills could be spiking for millions of New Jersey customers due to rate hikes on natural gas. Rate increases for natural gas customers were approved last month for PSE&G by the Board of Public Utilities. The higher rates were approved to maintain profit margins as the price of natural gas rises. Of PSEG's 2.4 million customers, 1.9 million are for gas. The new rates went into effect Saturday, Oct. 1. Power lines that fell across Route 208 closed the highway in both directions and ignited several small noontime brush fires.
