Murphy Signs Executive Order Closing All Non-Essential Businesses, Urges Residents To Stay Home
New Jersey Gov. Phil Murphy on Saturday ordered non-essential retail businesses closed and directed nearly all residents to stay home, as the number of deaths from the coronavirus rose to 16 -- five of them from last night -- and the number of positive cases jumped to 1327. UPDATE: New Jersey's first government-run drive-thru coronavirus testing site at Bergen Community College in Paramus closed after just four hours on Friday. A flashing traffic sign noted the testing site was closed around noon -- four hours after opening and four hours before its 4 p.m. scheduled stop time -- as police turned cars away. Gov. 'Thundersnow Blizzard' Imperils North Jersey Driving, Deep Freeze Next
Although Thursday morning's "thundersnow blizzard" was heaviest in south and central Jersey -- particularly along the coast -- high winds made for potentially perilous driving. The George Washington Bridge had a 35 mile-an-hour speed restriction, and the south walkway was closed, as winds gusted to more than 50 miles an hour -- reducing visibility to near zero.
