It was noontime when a Memorial School classmate saw the boy choking and ran to get Laura Schreck. Schreck, a retired New Jersey State Parole Board lieutenant, brought more than 25 years of law enforcement experience when the South Hackensack Board of Education hired her in 2022.  Schreck removed the boy from the lunchroom, delivered multiple back blows and used the Heimlich Maneuver to eventually free his airway. The standoff ended about 4½ hours after it began when members of the Bergen County Regional SWAT team entered the home and took the 43-year-old resident into custody. The landlord had called police around 9:30 a.m., saying he'd heard a lot of loud banging and water running for a couple of hours in the Dyer Avenue apartment off Route 80. Afterward, a lieutenant reminded Jackson that he couldn’t drive, the chief said Tuesday. Jackson, in turn, “mumbled something,” then got into his mother…

The school is closed out of an abundance of caution from Nov. 25 through Dec. 7, Jordan said. All Dumont schools went virtual on Nov. 20 and will resume in-person learning on Dec. 7 due to "a number of reported cases [and] the shortage of available staff," the district said. The switch came after one person tested positive …
