Authorities said the driver of a black 2005 Audi4 — which a source told CLIFFVIEW PILOT was possibly stolen out of Edgewater — cut off Officer Gabriel Castellanos in the highway’s westbound lanes just before 10 p.m. before fleeing.
Castellanos was treated at Hackensack University Medical Center. The cruiser sustained front and rear damage.
The Audi wasn’t found.
A spokesman for Bergen County Sheriff Michael Saudino, under whose jurisdiction the former BCPD now rests, said investigators were trying to determine whether there is any video of the incident.
Last Friday, Bergen County Executive Jim Tedesco signed a pair of ordinances folding the county department into the sheriff’s office. The new division is called the sheriff’s Bureau of Police Services (SEE: It’s done: Tedesco officially folds county police into Bergen Sheriff’s Office).
As of this afternoon, the BCPD “no longer officially exists,” Capt. James Mullin said in an email to CLIFFVIEW PILOT after releasing information about last night’s crash to media outlets.
“Effective immediately, all press releases, media requests and/or requests for information regarding the activities of the Bergen County Sheriff’s Office shall be directed to the BCSO Public Information Officer, Mr. Anthony Cureton,” Mullin wrote in the 6:19 p.m. email.
Cureton said his office was “still collecting information” this afternoon.
