A Fair Lawn resident summoned police around 8 this morning after seeing what he described as “a suspicious dark-colored Jeep stop near two children who were walking to school,” Police Sgt. Richard Schultz said.
“The two children were then seen running away from the vehicle,” the sergeanta said. “The resident was unsure if any words were exchanged;
the vehicle then drove off toward Berkshire Road.”
Officers rushed to the neighborhood but couldn’t find the vehicle.
According to the youngsters, it had tinted windows.

They described the driver as in his 50s, about 5-foot-6, with dark spiked hair.
The youngsters told police “no words were exchanged but they were not sure if the male made any gestures for them to approach the vehicle,” Schultz said. “Both children ran away from the vehicle because they were scared.”
Given the current anxiety, Schultz offered some tips for parents in talking with their children:
1) Discuss predatory lures that are commonly used (asking for assistance, lost pet, bribery, faking an emergency about a family member, etc.)’
2) Encourage youngsters to travel in groups, to always be aware of their surroundings, and to be ever-alert;
3) If approached by a stranger, children should: a) DROP anything they are carrying that may slow them down; b) HOLLER and make as much noise or commotion as possible and c) RUN to a safe location.
4) They should NEVER get into a stranger’s car;
5) If they have a cellphone, they should dial 911.
