Jack Abramson spent several weeks in the Bergen County Jail on $100,000 bail before pleading guilty on March 5 to charges that include theft and corporate misconduct.
Superior Court Judge James J. Guida released Abramson without bail pending the scheduled sentencing.
The judge also returned a separate theft charge to Municipal Court in Hoboken, where one of the victims lives, Guida’s clerk said today.
Bergen County Prosecutor John L. Molinelli said his staff began investigating Abramson following an Eyewitness News report by Nina Pineda.
The ‘7 On Your Side’ segment centered on several consumer complaints about Abramson and his Ridgefield-based company, JAG Equipment Sales.
Several victims later told detectives that they “had entered into purchase agreements with Jack Abramson to buy or lease commercial restaurant equipment,” Molinelli said in January, following the arrest.
The customers said Abramson gave them invoices with prices and delivery times, then took deposits ranging from $276 to $20,400, the prosecutor said. “The victims subsequently reported that they never received the equipment,” he said.
When they called Abramson, Molinelli said, they “were given repetitive excuses as to why the equipment had not been delivered as per the purchase agreement.”
They demanded their money back and never got it, he said.
The case was presented to a grand jury in Hackensack, which indicted Abramson on Dec. 21 on charges of theft, misconduct by a corporate official and dozens of other related counts.
Among those cited was a Hoboken business owner who said he put down $12,500 for four refrigeration units that were never delivered.
His lawyer reportedly sent a notice to the Ridgefield address Abramson had given. But instead of getting Jag Equipment Sales, Inc. — which has no listing anywhere — the attorney found “Agj Equipment” listed at the 1100 River Street address, which was referred to on one online site as “Jag Equipment Dishwasher and Chemicals.”
