Sgt. Allan DeLeon and Officer John Herrmann were among the officers who responded to a 5:50 a.m. 911 call and found the 67-year-old resident in his home, Capt. Brian Corcoran said.

He was "holding a fully loaded Smith and Wesson .357 Magnum handgun against his chest with his finger on the trigger, threatening suicide," the captain said.

After several tense minutes in which he refused the officers' pleas that he drop the weapon, Herrmann distracted the distraught man long enough for DeLeon to grab the gun, he said.

Backups helped restrain the man, who was taken to Bergen Regional Medical Center in Paramus for a psychiatric evaluation, Corcoran said.

Authorities couldn't confirm a report that the man might have been upset over losing his job and wife.
