The 53-foot tractor-trailer, registered to JB Hunt, was traveling eastbound on New Bridge Road approaching the intersection of South Prospect Avenue when it struck the rear of a vehicle waiting in the left turn lane, Police Chief Michael Carr said tonight.

The impact sent that vehicle into another vehicle also waiting to turn left onto South Prospect, he said.

The tractor trailer then skidded into the westbound lanes of New Bridge Road, where it hit four other westbound vehicles — including a Smart Car that nearly went under the trailer but was stopped by the landing legs, the chief said.

The Bergenfield Volunteer Ambulance Corps were assisted by their colleagues from Teaneck in taking the five injured drivers — ages 18, 46, 49, 56, 59 — to Hackensack University Medical Center and Holy Name Medical Center, he said.

The tractor-trailer driver wasn’t injured, Carr added. Summonses against him were being prepared, the chief said.

New Milford police assisted with traffic.

Bergenfield firefighters cleaned up spilled fuel.
