Heric Malave, 26, took off on foot after his silver Nissan was stopped in the highway’s westbound lanes and he failed a roadside sobriety test at mile marker 67.9 around 9:30 a.m. Saturday, NJSP Sgt. Jeff Flynn told CLIFFVIEW PILOT.
The trooper was struggling with Malave after catching him on the grass median of the inner express roadway when Malave pulled a .25-caliber handgun and pointed it at him, Flynn said.
A trooper who responded as backup helped his colleague wrest the weapon from the 6-foot-1-inch, 200-pound Malave, who took off again.
Malave crossed the outer local lanes onto the grassy area off the shoulder, where the troopers tackled and subdued him.
Troopers Eric Chaves and Paul Volpe were treated for minor injuries, as was Malave, at Hackensack University Medical Center.
Malave (also known as Carlos Fields) remained held this morning on $250,000 bail in the Bergen County Jail, charged with aggravated assault with a firearm on a law enforcement officer, resisting arrest, cocaine possession and three weapons offenses — including being a felon in possession of a firearm — as well as DWI.
