Detailed description of truck, man in Bergenfield attempted luring report

YOU READ IT HERE FIRST: Bergenfield Police Chief Michael Carr this afternoon confirmed a report of a possible luring attempt reported Monday night by a 12-year-old boy, who said he had to hide in a backyard when a man who tried to pick him up in a truck followed him. The boy said the man matched a police sketch (above) in a reported incident in Westwood.

The boy told police he was walking home from a friend’s house on West Broad Street near Fairview Avenue around 6:15 p.m. when the pickup truck’s driver stopped and offered him money to get in, Carr said.

He said he told the driver “no,” then ran down Fairview Avenue and into a backyard, where he wanted until the vehicle passed.

The boy said he then watched the truck turn onto South Prospect Avenue, headed northbound.

Carr said he described the vehicle as a Toyota, late-model with white-colored fenders, a mint-green driver-side door, a red-colored pick-up bed with rusty sections and black color on the hood, “which did not appear to belong to that type truck model, as he could see part of the engine.”

He described the driver as:

  • white, in  his late 50’s;
  • balding, with gray hair on the sides of his head;
  • possibly wearing a fake white-colored mustache;
  • cracked or missing teeth;
  • wearing a red and black plaid shirt with a tear in the front.

The boy ran home and told his aunt, who called police, Carr said.

Officers checked the area and issued an alert, the chief said.

Meanwhile, a Juvenile Bureau detective interviewed the boy, showing him sketches produced from similar reports throughout Bergen County, he said.

The boy “picked out the sketch of a male from a case in Westwood” on Oct. 18 (above), Carr said.
