Officer Peter Bongiovanni was headed south on Johnson Avenue around 11:30 last night when the driver of a 2002 Ford Escape coming toward him cut a sudden U-turn, causing a collision, Lt. Robert Espinosa said.

The Escape spun but continued south before coming to a dead stop at Main Street, the lieutenant said.

Bergen County K9 Officer Les Lorenc quickly grabbed the driver.

Bongiovanni was treated at Hackensack University Medical Center and released with minor injuries, Espinosa said.

A female passenger in the other driver’s car also was treated, he said.

Meanwhile, county police charged Luis J. Sanchez with several offenses:

  • DWI;
  • Refusing to submit breath samples;
  • Leaving the scene of an accident resulting in injuries;
  • Improper U-turn;
  • Careless driving;
  • Assault by auto.

Sanchez was processed at Bergen County Police Headquarters and later released to the custody of a family member pending court action, Espinosa said.
