Couple on tandem bike struck in Rockleigh, driver flees

ONLY ON CVP: A 67-year-old Rockland motorist who Northvale police said kept going after her SUV struck a husband and wife riding a tandem bicycle near the New York State border faces possible criminal charges in the crash, CLIFFVIEW PILOT has learned.

The 53-year-old woman and 55-year-old man were struck just after 2:30 yesterday when the driver, headed south on Piermont Road in Rockleigh, turned her black Toyota Highlander right onto King Road.

A good Samaritan rushed to their aid and summoned help as the DUV driver kept going, Northvale Police Lt. William Essmann told CLIFFVIEW PILOT this morning.

The witness also provided enough good information for police to track the vehicle to the area of a nearby industrial park, the lieutenant said.

A source with knowledge of the incident told CLIFFVIEW PILOT the vehicle sustained damage to the rear quarter-panel on the passenger side.

Paramedics and two ambulances responded, and the husband and wife were taken to Hackensack University Medical Center with injuries that were deemed not life-threatening, Essmann said.

After questioning the driver, Northvale police were preparing criminal charges today – likely for leaving the scene of an accident with injuries — and were writing up several motor vehicle summonses.

“It still is an active investigation,” Essmann said this morning.
