Birthday surprise for injured Teaneck fire captain

ONLY ON CLIFFVIEW PILOT: Mairead Kearns turned 8 on Saturday, but her dad — injured Teaneck Fire Capt. Paul Kearns — got the birthday treat when she, her older brother Aedan and their mom brought the celebration to the Kessler Institute for Rehabilitation in Saddle Brook.

“I was surprised,” said Kearns, whose family brought smiles that cut through the intense pain his wife said he’s endured since falling 15 feet while battling a stubborn Hackensack blaze last weekend.

“I’m making progress,” Kearns told CLIFFVIEW PILOT this afternoon, “but I’m still in a lot of pain.”

Some colleagues thought Kearns was doing fine after falling through the roof of an enclosed porch during the blaze.

However, he actually tore several muscles in his lower back.

Kearns, who was released from Hackensack University Medical Center on Thursday and transferred to Kessler, must remain in a brace for six to eight weeks, Colleen Kearns told CLIFFVIEW PILOT.

At that point, she said, they’ll determine whether her husband needs surgery or can continue rehab.

“They told him he’s very lucky,” she said. “He has very strong muscles.

“His spirits are great,” Colleen Kearns added. “He’s very determined. He can’t wait to get back to playing ball with his son.”
