73-year-old career criminal with 60-arrest sheet charged with stealing used car off South Hackensack lot

ONLY ON CVP: A 73-year-old career criminal with more than 60 arrests dating to 1970 was being held on more than $23,000 bail after authorities said he stole a used car off a Route 46 lot in Hackensack.

Carmine J. Carpino of Hoboken — whose rap sheet includes arrests for arson, assault, burglary, lewdness and weapons possession — was out on bail for alleged offenses in Cliffside Park, Hackensack and Lyndhurst when he walked onto the lot, noticed the keys in the ignition of a 2010 Chrysler 300 and drove off with it, authorities said.

Hackensack police picked up Carpino last night and charged him with receiving stolen property. South Hackensack police charged him with theft, Capt. Robert Kaiser told CLIFFVIEW PILOT.

The 6-foot-2-inch Carpino — who has used the aliases Tony Alezzio, James Carpino and Carmen Carpino — was arrested earlier this year on charges of shoplifting, defiant trespassing and improper behavior in Cliffside Park and violating a municipal ordinance in Lyndhurst, and in Hackensack last year on charges of harassment and hindering apprehension, records show.

He has been arrested no fewer than 20 times in Bergen County alone in just the past two decades, for crimes ranging from failing to pay child support and disorderly conduct to criminal mischief and resisting arrest — along with a host of parole violations.

In that time, records show charges out of Cliffside Park, Englewood, Fairview, Hackensack, Little Ferry, Lodi and Teaneck.
