It was never anything severe or life-threatening, but constantly having head colds certainly was uncomfortable and exhausting.
The only thing that seemed to help was holistic medicine, particularly chiropractic — which is why the Fair Lawn native pursued just that.
"Being in treatment and chiropractic care helped my health and immune system," said Shmaruk, who opened his Jefferson Street practice, Back2Health Chiropractic and Therapy Center, in 2008.
The Tae Kwon Do black belt specializes in sports injuries, automobile accidents, work-related traumas and family wellness programs.
He takes a holistic and hands-on approach to find the root of a problem.
"We don’t try to cover up symptoms with a Band-Aid®," Shmaruk said.
His methods avoid "unnecessary intervention" such as surgery, drugs and medication, which often can lead to opiate addictions, he said.
Shmaruk worked with an Olympic-bound Russian bobsled team, but the majority of his patients are local Bergen County residents — police officers, nurses, moms, and more.
And what's the injury he sees most? Back pain, he said.
It's the second most common ailment in the U.S. behind the common cold, Shmaruk said. And starting preventative treatment early on — before it's too late — is key.
"It's about treating people from a young age rather than coming in with an arthritic condition, which can put life at a standstill," the physician said.
But the one thing Shmaruk wants people to know: "We're here to help," he said.
