Tractor-trailer dumps garbage across Fort Lee highway

YOU READ IT HERE FIRST: A garbage hauling tractor-trailer tipped over before dawn in Fort Lee, spilling trash across the road and closing Route 1/46 near the George Washington Bridge.

The 50-year-old driver from the Bronx told police he felt the steering wheel shimmy as he passed the Bergen Boulevard split around 2:30 a.m.

As he reached the curved ramp, the driver said, he lost control and the rig tipped.

Heavy duty crews cleaned up the mess in time for the morning rush. But Route 1 southbound was closed for several hours and two of the northbound lanes for more than two, Police Capt. Stanley Zon said.
