A 32-year-old Elizabeth man was sentenced to 11 years in state prison on Thursday, Feb. 8, for fatally striking a woman in the city and fleeing the scene in Aug. 2020, authorities said.
At 12:30 a.m. on Aug. 20, 2020, Elizabeth police responded to the Oakwood Apartment Complex on a report of a pedestrian struck by a vehicle, Union County Prosecutor William A. Daniel, Elizabeth Police Director Earl Graves, and Elizabeth Police Chief Giacomo Sacca said. A New Jersey man admitted that he sent racist texts to a Maryland woman threatening to hurt her and her family, federal authorities said.
"I know where you live now, I'm coming to rape your family," Michael Marotta, 26, of Sewell (Gloucester County) texted the woman using an anonymizing messaging service, they said.

Jamahl Smith, 46, refused repeated commands by responding officers to drop the knife on the third floor of the Oakwood Towers on Oakwood Avenue around 3 p.m. June 13, 2019, Acting New Jersey Attorney General Andrew J. Bruck said Wednesday.
