Newark, Orange Businesses Barred From Government Contracts Over Labor Violations: State DOL
Nineteen businesses who owe a total of $1.1 million have been barred from public contracting until they pay back their dues, the New Jersey Department of Labor said. R.A. Florio Building Contractors Inc., of Toms River, for example, has been ordered to pay $39,555.57 to the state, according to the department of labor and workforce development. The final judgment was given on Wednesday, Dec. 9, 2020. The contractor is one of 101 total businesses on New Jersey's Workplace Accountability in Labor List, also known as the WALL. $1.5M Grant Will Transform Abandoned Railroad Into Hiking, Biking Trail In North Jersey
A long-abandoned railroad track that runs through Union County will soon be transformed into a hiking and biking trail, thanks to a $1.5 federal grant. Rahway Valley Railroad tracks that run through Roselle Park and Kenilwroth are slated to become multi-use tracks designed for pedestrians and bicyclists, the New Jersey Department of Transportation said. A fire at an auto body shop at Kenilworth caused a roof to partially collapse on Tuesday evening, May 30, authorities said. Police and fire received an activated smoke alarm alert coming from Perfection Plus at 740 Federal Ave. at 8:22 p.m., Detective Sergeant Michael Scanielo of the Kenilworth Police Department said. Pickup Driver Dead, 7 Passengers Hurt In Pre-Dawn Parkway Crash
A 69-year-old pickup truck driver died and his seven passengers were hurt in a crash on the Garden State Parkway Tuesday, June 7, authorities said. Thomas F. Gilbert Jr. was heading south near milepost 140.3 in Kenilworth when he crossed all lanes of travel, causing the van to hit the front left side of the truck around 4 a.m., New Jersey State Police Sgt. Lawrence Peele said. The van then struck a concrete barrier, and South Plainfield's Gilbert was killed, police said. Seven pickup passengers and the van driver were treated for unknown injuries.

Pedestrian Struck, Killed In Cranford Crash
A pedestrian was struck and killed in an early-morning crash Tuesday in Cranford, authorities said. The pedestrian was crossing Springfield Avenue when they were struck by a 51-year-old Kenilworth man heading south and approaching Orange Avenue, in a 2006 Hyundai Sonata, local police said. The victim was taken to a local hospital with serious injuries, where they later died. The Hyundai driver stayed at the scene and cooperated with police. : Firefighters Battle 4-Alarm Kenilworth Blaze
Firefighters from several agencies battled a four-alarm fire that broke out overnight Saturday at a steel mill in Kenilworth. The Blue Blade Steel building at 123 N. 8th St. was heavily damaged, police said. A cause had not been determined as of Sunday morning. The fire broke out around 1 a.m., and brought firefighters from Kenilworth, Elizabeth, Cranford, Union, Springfield, and Hillside to the scene.
