From education and economics to housing, public safety and even the environment, several factors were considered for the 2020 Healthiest Communities rankings compiled by the Aetna Foundation. The list — which comprises 500 communities across America — includes two New Jersey counties in the top 25 spots alone. Hunterdon County came in at no. 15 and Morris County at no. 22. While population health and equity are the most heavily weighted factors, several other elements were considered as well. “Local health outcomes are often driven by factors like a community’s economic performance, the …

Effort To Overhaul Kingsland Ave. Bridge In Nutley Gets A Boost
The Army Corps of Engineers has issued a permit that will allow officials to seek final approval for a plan to repair or replace entirely the 114-year-old Kingsland Avenue bridge connecting Nutley and Lyndhurst, the office of Rep. Bill Pascrell (D-9) said Friday. A project must now be approved by the U.S. Coast Guard. “A decaying two-lane road beset by traffic bottlenecks and drawbridge jams is no longer acceptable for the 21,000 vehicles crossing this bridge every day to go to work, take kids to the doctor, and run to the market,” Pascrell said in a statement Our federal, state, cou…

In our hearts, New Jersey might be the best state but according to U.S. News, there are 11 others ahead of us. New Jerseyans earn a median income of $40,567 and 46 percent of residents are college-educated. The state was ranked at No. 49 for fiscal stability (yikes), Illinois at 50. Washington holds the top seed for its infrastructure, economy, healthcare and education with New Hampshire in second -- ranked No. 1 for crime/corrections and opportunity. …

Poll: Nearly Everyone Wants N.J. Roads Fixed. Only Half Want To Pay.
A proposed federal spending package for the nation’s crumbling infrastructure is overwhelmingly popular in New Jersey. About 80 percent of respondents in a recent Stockton University survey support fixing bridges, tunnels and roads in the Garden State -- if the U.S. government pays for it. But if the plan is funded by New Jerseyans? Not so much. Just about half of respondents, 48 percent, said they would be unwilling to foot the bill, while 45 percent said they would be willing. “New Jersey is a very high-tax state, and taxpayers already feel that they are tapped out,” said Michael W. Hole Repair Jams Westbound Route 80 Traffic
UPDATE: Overnight repairs had to be made on a hole that opened on westbound Route 80 in Woodland Park after a drainpipe pipe below it collapsed. Monday night rush-hour traffic was backed up to the George Washington Bridge. The crack in the pipe, which connects basins at the median to the right shoulder, created a hole between the two left lanes. Drivers were urged to take alternate routes. Three lanes in all could be compromised, a road crew said.Contributed photo Contributed photos ****** ALSO SEE: A 12-year-old Totowa girl received sexually explicit texts and a gift in the mail fr…
