Last July, hundreds of dead menhaden -- an extremely abundant fish found in coastal areas, also known as bunker fish -- were seen floating in the Hudson River, causing shock and concern among many residents. Environmentalists Explain Hundreds Of Dead Fish Floating In Hudson River Hundreds of dead fish recently found floating in the Hudson River are no cause for concern, environmentalists say.  Their deaths, in fact, are the result of a "naturally occurring phenomenon," according to the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC). The dead bunker were first spotted floating between 59th Street and the George Washington Bridge on the Manhattan side of the river.
