The overnight trashing Wednesday of the Center for Islamic Life at Rutgers University in New Brunswick -- which coincides with the end of the holy month of Ramadan -- is being treated as a bias crime, authorities said. Someone forced their way in sometimes before 4:30 a.m. April 10, broke glass and destroyed artwork and various other possessions, Rutgers Police Chief Kenneth Cop said. A consortium of mayors throughout North Jersey are demanding an apology from the White House to Prospect Park Mayor Mohamed Khairullah after he was denied entry for a celebration marking the end of Ramadan. Khairullah, who was recently sworn in for his fifth term as mayor, was told by Secret Service Monday, May 1 that he had not been cleared for entry. Sayed Elnakib was leading an early morning prayer service at the Omar Mosque in Paterson on Sunday when a man among the worshippers suddenly rushed forward and stabbed the beloved imam, surveillance video shows. The assailant, 32-year-old Serif Zorba, turned and bolted for the door, but the worshippers -- without regard for their own safety -- quickly converged on the assailant and held him for police. Bergen Sheriff Meets With County Leaders, Local Law Enforcement To Review Ramadan Security
In preparation for Ramadan, Bergen County Sheriff Anthony Cureton coordinated a briefing to discuss public safety precautions. Attending were Bergen County Executive Jim Tedesco, Freeholder Vice-Chair Mary Amoroso, Acting Prosecutor Dennis Calo, faith leaders from Bergen County mosques and local law enforcement personnel. Bergen County Sheriff Anthony Cureton scheduled a pre-Ramadan briefing Tuesday night to discuss public safety precautions with law enforcement, religious, and community leaders. The Muslim holiday of Ramadan begins on the evening of Sunday, May 5. Cureton scheduled the 6:30 p.m. session Tuesday in the second-floor lineup room at 2 Bergen County Plaza.
