'Extraordinary' Police Captain To Make History As Jersey Shore City's First Female Chief A police captain in Cape May County will make history when she's sworn in as her city's first female police chief. Capt. Katherine Madden will become the police chief of North Wildwood on Wednesday, May 1, the city announced. She will be North Wildwood's 14th police chief in the city's history. Madden will replace Chief John Stevenson when he retires on Tuesday, Apr. 30. Chief Stevenson has served in the city's police department for more than 30 years, including the last three as chief. State Denies Beach Erosion Prevention Plan For Jersey Shore City A plan to protect beaches in one Cape May County city has been blocked by the state, officials said. The state Department of Environmental Protection (NJDEP) sent a letter to the City of North Wildwood denying an emergency request to build a beachfront bulkhead, the city announced on Thursday, Feb. 1. The proposal called for a 752-foot-long steel bulkhead from the middle of 12th and 13th avenues to 15th Avenue.  The proposed bulkhead would be 12 feet tall and capped with boardwalk-style decking. 'Ultimate Ambassador:' Former Jersey Shore City Mayor Dies At 90 Former North Wildwood Mayor Aldo Palombo has died, the city in Cape May County announced. An obituary for Palombo said he died with his wife and family by his side on Saturday, Jan. 27. He was the 15th mayor of North Wildwood, serving the city from 1994 to 2005. The city said Palombo rescued North Wildwood during some difficult times. "Mayor Palombo brought his indomitable optimism and incredible energy to the Office of Mayor," the city said in a news release.
